Glaser Safety Slug - Aircraft and Airport Security.

The GLASER SAFETY SLUG was used by the Sky Marshals Service for a number of years. Before the Safety Slug was selected by the FAA, extensive testing under a number of different situations was preformed. The Sky Marshals service was faced with a much different situation than other law enforcement officers and they needed a round that would be effective but also safe.

The Glaser Safety Slug is composed of a compressed lead core. Individual lead pellets are compressed under great pressure into a nearly solid composition. This core is topped with a polymer ball to produce a bullet with a rounded profile. Upon impact with a inanimate object, the core fractures into a number of pieces. This immediate expansion reduced the penetration, imparts tremendous energy, and produces immense stopping power.

On board an aircraft or in an airport, several factors must be considered. First, the encounter is going to be in close quarters. The Glaser Safety Slug design allows the bullet to expand very rapidly. All the available energy is immediately dumped into the target, reducing over penetration and the possibility that the round will exit. The compressed core fractures along the stress lines, producing tremendous upfront energy and shocking power.

Second, structural integrity. If a discharge does not hit the intended target, what damage will it do to the aircraft? Upon encounter with the aircraft substructure, the compressed core design will fracture and break apart or deform. Because of the rapid energy transfer, the damage to the frame or structures will be much less than any other type bullet. Hydraulic lines and control cables are a real concern. The Glaser has a smooth polymer ball on the nose. Even if a bullet were to hit a line, it is less prone to penetrate a hydraulic line or to puncture a hose.

Third, is controllability. The Glaser Safety Slug is a high performance round using velocity, not weight, to generate the necessary energy. The lighter bullet produces less felt recoil and less muzzle flip. These rounds are very controllable in the new modern alloy frame and compact concealed carry guns. The round nose profile will give reliable feeding in any gun.

New bullet designs have come along in the last several years, but none equals the Glaser Safety Slug in safety, performance and reliability. This bullet design is perfect for use in highly populated areas, where over penetration is a major concern. Glaser has been used by all levels of law enforcement for over 30 years with great success.
